General Rules for Expression Web or FrontPage Web work.

These rules are presented as a basis for working with basic webs.  There may be other situations why something works or does not work. These are designed to establish basic technique.

Rule # 1:  When Naming files, use lowercase, no spaces, no special characters, 10 or fewer characters.  Names done this way will work with all host servers and browsers.

Rule # 2.  When changing anything in your web or any page in your web always open the web in FrontPage, do action (move files, rename files, make hyperlinks on pages, add content), save changed pages, close web.

Rule # 3.  When publishing your web, open your web in FrontPage from the hard disk drive (if your web is on a diskette, first publish to the HD), publish using the http-IP address and your web name (steps listed with lab assignment 1).  Allow time for the publishing to occur.  Be familiar with the messages you will see and the options on the publish box.

Some reasons why your web does not publish or you URL does not produce a hit:

Publishing Problems - Causes

Install Expression Web or FrontPage with extensions

Internet connection must be active (start up AOL then Expression Web or FrontPage)

Open your web in Expression Web or FrontPage from the hard drive copy (web cannot be embedded within   another web)

Your first page (home page) must be named default.htm

Provide correct publish command - format must be http://IP-Address/webname

Login difficulty - login and password must be lower case with no spaces

              Login name is             webstudents

Password is                 xxxxxxxxxxxx (assigned in class)

If you get an error - Server Busy- you had a previous publishing error and your web is locked.  Email the professor to unlock your web.

After publishing is complete, click the done button.  In a browser, hit your web.

Expression Web or FrontPage Subwebs or Folders?

Subwebs vs. folders in Expression Web or FrontPage

When you create a Web in Expression Web or FrontPage, you can stick all your HTML
files, picture files, and other content in a single directory. Or you
can create folders to organize your content. Or you can create subwebs.

So what's the difference between a folder and a subweb? Just like in
Windows, a folder is simply a device for organizing content. The
standard images folder Expression Web or FrontPage creates is a good example. You might
also create a folder to hold downloadable files or back issues of your
company's newsletter.

A subweb, on the other hand, is actually a complete separate Web that's
nested within your root web. Subwebs can have their own themes, their
own navigation structures, and their own passwords. If you want to
create a special, password-protected section of your company's Web site
that your sales force can access, a subweb is the way to go. The easiest
way to create a subweb is to convert an existing folder into a subweb.
Just right-click on the folder in Folders view and choose Convert To
Web from the shortcut menu.
